Official Rating: G

After years of anticipation, many enraptured watches, and way too long of a delay later, we have finally written our review for the first episode of the WingFeather Saga! For those of you who have not read the books or seen the first short, it is about three siblings, Janner, Kalmar(nicknamed Tink) and Leeli Igiby, who live in a place called Skree under the thumb of the dreaded and deadly Fangs(woe!), hideous, human/lizard amalgamations who rule the humans with an iron fist. During the annual Dragon Day festival, where sea dragons sing, several things happen which they cannot explain…
Good Parts: Where to begin… Let’s start with the style. It is gorgeously painterly and cinematographically terrific. The audio is likewise amazing, as can be expected when the author is a musician. A bard sings at the festival, the dragons sort of sing, and Leeli sings, so you music lovers will be satisfied. The wildlife of Aerwiar are fascinating. A thwap chasing scene which takes place near the beginning is slapstickally hilarious. In the town of Glipwood, we find Books and Crannies, a bookstore that is simply marvelous. Dragon Day festivities are also extremely engaging. At the climax of the episode, magical things happen.
Religion: Just a short before-dinner prayer to the Maker.
Violence: A toothy cow chases the boys at the beginning. Mr. Reteep mentions a Dimble the Chopped, who researched the smells present in dragon breath. Consider the proximity of his nose to his subject matter and let your imagination fill in the blanks. Another book, 1001 things the author was surprised to see a dragon eat, Dimble the Chopped was no. 411. The kids fight a Fang.
Sexual Content: Janner has a crush on Sara Cobbler, but that's not necessarily sexual.
Language: Merely some insults Fangward on the part of the humans and some maledictions humanward on the part of the Fangs. Each complains about the other.
Supernatural: No bad magic makes an appearance, but good magic from music does.
Other: The Black Carriage takes someone right at the beginning. To quote from Pembrick’s Creaturepedia, the Fazzle Dove “emits a malodorous smell, which usually reminds one of an uncle or grandfather after a large meal.” Maggotloaf is disgusting. Fangs are not only hideous, but obsessively controlling. And they have terrible eating habits. (is there anything good to be said about the Fangs?) If you mind alcoholic consumption, Podo visits a tavern. A neighbor is unsociable.
Summary: The period of suspense was worth the wait! Brilliantly, the first episode fulfilled the expectations of countless WingFeather fans around the world. As Season One is complete, you do not have to wait in suspense to see what happens next! We cannot wait to review the rest for you. In short, “Leeli and the Sea Dragon Song“ perfectly sets the tone for what promises to be one of the best TV shows of our time. Score 10/10.
